Wedding Advice From Friends, Well Intentioned or Not?

Wedding Advice From Friends, Well Intentioned or Not?

Brides are bombarded with wedding advice from
everywhere and everyone. The net is full of
advice, bridal magazines offer advice, bridal shows,
and wedding professionals (moi included). This advice
is the kind you can tuck away for the future or
totally ignore.

Your family and friends are full of advice. This advice
is right in your face, so how do you deal with it?
Its hard to ignore someone who's telling you what
you SHOULD do when they are in your face.
Question: How do you draw the line from well
meaning advice
to total annoyance?

What you hear: My wedding...blah, blah, blah.
I did it this way and you should do this..blah, blah.

What you may think they are saying:
My wedding is better than yours will ever be.

What they are really saying: I want to talk
all about my wedding so I can relive it again
and again. I want the spotlight on me.

So, what should you do? Smile, take the advice
with a grain of salt and let it go. There is no
reason to get upset, they may be very well
intentioned and they may really want to help.
They may actually have hit upon an idea that
is worth checking out. Or not.

When it gets to the point of annoyance,
say to them nicely " I haven't firmed up
that area yet and I'll take your suggestion
under consideration." And then change the

When Mom says " We did it this way" and
"I want it done this way", its time to let her know
that times have changed since her wedding. Things
are done differently, she's had her wedding. Tell her
that you've always dreamed of doing it another way and
would she please spend some time with you going over
your wedding plans?

Some Mom's wont let it go. If that's the case, have someone
she trusts talk to her about the wedding plans. It could
be Dad, . her best friend or it could be the consultant at
the bridal salon.

You are not under obligation to do things
THEIR way. You don't have to take their advice,
patronize their wedding vendors or use their advice.
Ultimately, this is YOUR wedding, and you get
to have your wedding, your way! Their wedding is history,
yours is now. Happy planning!

Bigger is Not Always Better....

Yup, I found out the hard way that bigger
is not always better, speaking of diamonds,
of course. What did you think I was talking

I inherited a humongous diamond ring from a
92 year old aunt since I was the only one who bothered
to visit her at the nursing home. All the relatives
were pissed off that I scored the diamond.
We had all secretly lusted after this gem since
we were tots. Aunt Sally was proud of her ring
and flashed it like an old Hollywood star in a very
dramatic fashion. She was SO dramatic and this
ring suited her personality, big, brash and bold.

The diamond was a gift from her husband on their
25th wedding anniversary wedding. The center
diamond is like a hallogen headlight or a beacon from a
light house. It's BIG.

I decide the ring needs to be insured and I took it to
have it appraised. It turns out the stone is as flawed
as some politician's consciences. Oh, you can't see it,
but its flawed. One store offered me $125 for the ring.
He based it on the fact that the band is 18K gold. So off
I go to another jewelry store to get to the bottom of
the diamond's worth. This guy told me "Its an old
diamond." Geeze, aren't all diamonds old? He said
it would have value if it was new. WTF? He offered
me $100 for the stone. So off to appraisal #3, same
story. Worth less than a couple of hundred bucks.

I brought the ring home and put it in a safe while
I decide to leave it status quo or reset it.

I always thought diamonds kept their value, but
apparently that is only if the diamond is flawless.
And a flawless diamond will cost you as much as
a new house. Whouda thot?

I don't know much about buying diamonds. Maybe
a little, but I'm sure not a gemologist. But
I know that I've seen some really big rocks on
engaged gals. And I've seen some teeny rocks, too.
Makes me wonder if the big rocks are flawed.
Or if they are real. Or why I'm wasting my time
wondering about diamonds. Or maybe I'm just
disappointed that the ring I lusted after for
years is worthless in value, but rich in sentimental

So girls, if you want a big diamond, prepare to
pay big bucks or settle for perfect as in "I found
my perfect soul mate". Size doesn't matter.

Weddingzilla's Top Wedding Trends

Weddingzilla has compiled our top
10 wedding trends for 2008.

Top Wedding Trend # 1. Going Green,
which is the perfect topic for Earth Day. Brides are
using earth friendly favors or donating to earth
friendly charities in lieu of favors. They are
holding outdoor wedding ceremonies and taking
steps to combat their carbon footprints. Today's bride
is using lots of fresh plants and flowers for
table decorations and asking the guests to take
them home. Couples are spending a lot of time
researching earth friendly weddings and incorporating
them into the wedding. Here's another great green favor.

Top Wedding Trend #2: Putting your
own stamp on the wedding.
Couples are less about having mom's wedding, more
about having it express who they are as a couple.
This can be anything from using a citrus color to accent a
Caribbean theme to having your best male friend serve as
man of honor.

Top Wedding Trend # 3: Joint bachelorette
and bachelor party.
Couples are nixing the traditional
drunk fest in favor of having a party to celebrate
the wedding together. It might be a pub crawl as
a group or it might be a group weekend at a mountain
cabin with cookouts, scavenger hunts and hiking.
Its less about the strip club and more about
the wedding party getting acquainted and having fun.

Top Wedding Trend #4: Return of
the wedding cake.
The wedding cake is back as the centerpiece of the
reception. Today's wedding cakes are more artsy and
unique. No more white bridges between cakes with dolls
dressed as the wedding party. These cakes are works of
art and are the latest wedding status symbol. Did you see
Ivana Trump's kabillion dollar cake? WOW! While the
cupcake tree is still popular, its being used more for the
rehearsal dinner or wedding showers.

Top Wedding Trend #5: The return of elegance.
Brides are choosing to return to elegant touches,
such as sprays of orchids on the reception tables,
to having monogrammed fabric napkins the guests
take home as gifts.

Top Wedding Trend # 6: Celebrating your family
Couples are embracing their family heritage
using a theme that defines their heritage. The newest trend
Weddingzilla has seen lately is an Irish Claddaugh theme in
invitations and favors. Couples are doing an emerald green
theme, using shamrocks on the reception tables, serving
Irish food and even having guests learn Irish dances at
the reception. One is even setting up a replica of an Irish
pub at her reception complete with a singing tenor bartender.

Top Wedding Trend # 7: Two wedding dresses.
Some brides are choosing a traditional formal wedding dress
for the ceremony, then changing into a shorter formal cocktail
dress or tea length wedding dress for the reception. A friend of
mine did this for her wedding. She wanted to marry in a formal
princess style ball gown but wanted to dance all night long at her
reception. Her dream dress wasn't a dancing dress. She wore
her dream gown for the ceremony and pictures. She changed into
a tea length dress for cocktails and the reception. She danced
like a star. It was awesome!

Top Wedding Trend # 8: Using color in your wedding.
For a long time, weddings have tended to more neutral colors.
Weddingzilla did a lot of weddings that were all champagne, cream
or ivory with ivory flowers. Elegant, sure, but dull in pictures.
The latest trend is to use a color that pops in wedding pictures and
accenting with colorful bouquets of mixed flowers.

Top Wedding Trend # 9 : Writing your own vows.
Weddingzilla knows that this has been a trend for
a long time, but it continues to dominate on our list.
Couples are saying what they feel, not reciting vows written
for someone else years ago. What woman wants to say
she will obey? Not moi. Writing your own vows gives
you a time to reflect on the relationship and the
and not focus on the party planning.

Top Wedding Trend # 10: Wedding party t shirts.
Tee shirts for all the members of the wedding party are
practically a requirement for the pre wedding parties and
wedding rehearsal. Its a fun gift for the wedding attendants.

Find Your Perfect Honeymoon Beach!

Beach Finder (468x60)

Attention all you beach people. You know who you
are. I'm a beach person. My ideal day is to sit on a beach,
smell the salt water and watch the waves crash against the
sparkling sand. There are amazing beaches in our world, the
challenge is finding one that suits your beach style.
Especially on your honeymoon, the right beach and hotel
make all the difference between magical memories and
a total disaster.

Yes, beaches have personality. Some have soft white sand,
some have black volcanic sand. Some have wildly crashing waves,
other beaches are smooth like glass. Some are rocky, some
are full of shells, others are like walking on sugar.

has come out with the coolest beach finder.
Plug in some easy decisions like adults only beaches,
honeymoon, passport or no passport, your interests and
what you want in a hotel and viola! Here come your choices.
You'll get sound effects of waves and graphics of
waves crashing on the sands. Orbitz's beach finder is like
playing a beach game, its actually fun and you get as
many do overs as you want. This tool is just perfect for
planning your honeymoon.

My best beaches were in Aruba, Puerto Rico, Punta Cana
and Curaco. I wouldn't have thought of most of those,
I've been in love with St. Maarten and St. Thomas' beaches.
Can these beaches possibly top my favorites? Guess I'll
have to find out.

I love Orbitz. I've always gotten great service, I can
compare prices and Orbitz keep you in the loop with your
airline reservations. They'll call your cell phone and
let you know if your flight is departing on time and from what
gate you are departing. Since I travel a lot, its a
lifesaver. Rather than at the airport for hours waiting
on a delayed flight, I know in advance my flight is delayed.
On my last flight, I used my air miles. I was angry at myself
for not booking with Orbitz. My flight was delayed for 6 hours
because of a cracked windshield on the plane. Orbitz would
have alerted me and I could have arranged a different flight
home. Instead, I spent all day standing in line at the airport
in uncomfortable (but oh, so stylish) shoes trying to get a
flight home. I learned my lesson.

Give it a test drive. You may just end up with the perfect
beach for your perfect honeymoon!

Use the *NEW* Orbitz Beach Finder to find YOUR Ideal Beach!

More Wedding Day Beauty Tips

Cindy, our skin guru, has given us more skin
tips to make your skin picture perfect on your
wedding day.

Weddingzilla: What is the one thing we can do for our skin
to make our skin look flawless?

Cindy: I can't say ONE thing, its a series of things
you need to do to. Get into a skin care regimen to
keep your skin clean and refine your pores. Moisturize
your skin, even if your skin is oily. There are moisturizers
make for oily skin. And sunscreen. Use sunscreen or a
base with a high SPF. The sun damages your skin, ages
your skin and will make your skin have pigmentation that
is not even. If you want to look tan, use a facial tanner.

Weddingzilla: What about fake and bake tans?

Cindy: I don't personally like tanning bed tans. The
color doesn't look as natural as a real sun tan. And when
you fake bake your face, it gives you lines around the eyes
and raccoon eyes from the goggles. I would suggest a
spray tan done a few days in advance. Airbrush tanning
looks more natural and is easier on your skin.

Weddingzilla: If we want to spray tan, what should we
do for makeup?

Cindy: Make sure your makeup matches your new skin color.
That's why we suggest you use a makeup artist on your
wedding day.

Weddingzilla: What if we get a breakout on our wedding day?
I have breakouts when I get nervous.

Cindy: We try and treat the breakout the minute it happens.
Don't mess with the blemish because it will make it worse.
DO NOT squeeze it or try and break it. You can end up with a
huge bloody red spot.

Don't use a strong acne cream because it could cause your skin
to dry and flake around the blemish.

Put a hot compress on the blemish and follow it with dabbing on
rubbing alcohol to try and dry up the blemish.

You can also try some homemade remedies that some of
my clients swear that work"

Use a warm tea bag. Wet the tea bag and apply it to
the spot.

Dot the spot with toothpaste the night before and allow it
to dry overnight.

Take the egg yoke and dab it on your face.

Make a mask of egg and milk and allow it to dry on your

Dab Visine on a cotton ball and treat the blemish.

And last of all, we'll cover the blemish with a concealer
before we apply makeup.
